The latest audio visual technology is not often associated with the world of animal medicine but when CPD training college CPD Solutions decided to expand the scope of their small animal surgery training courses, that’s just what was required. CPD means Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and is the term used to describe the learning activities professionals engage in to develop and enhance their abilities. The surgery training centre at their Ellesmere Port premises consists of a large ward of twelve operating tables where students can fine tune their surgery techniques whilst receiving training from a highly skilled professional veterinary tutor. The limitations of this are that students need to be very close to see what is going on which limits the number of attendees and makes for a crowded operating area.

To solve this problem, CPD solutions decided to install high resolution cameras connected to screens which would show the procedures to students without needing them to be on top of the surgeon. Director Phil Creed contacted audio visual supplier Cache Media Ltd to help with the necessary equipment and asked for a suitable solution and a recommended installer.

Cache Media works with a large number of system integrators and on seeing the project and producing a detailed solution with further ideas for potential expansion, decided that it was best handled by Wyre Broadcast who had the necessary experience and proximity to CPD. Wyre Broadcast’s Andy Unsworth took up the challenge and proceeded to work closely with CPD through to completion of the project.

The first phase of the installation was to involve using two Bolin 2 Series VCC Dual Output PTZ Cameras with two Bolin PTZ Remote Controllers (One on site control, One for Remote control over IP from a 2nd Site), a Marshall VAC-23 HDSDI Streaming Encoder , a Postium OBM-L180 Monitor and a 7” IPS Field Monitor from Cache Media. Installation of the cameras, monitors and cabling took place over a two day period.

To allow further options such as graphics and diagrams to be included with the video, Andy installed a range of extra equipment including two Samsung 55” LCD HD Screens, a Blackmagic Design ATEM TV Studio HD Vision Mixer, a Blackmagic Design Hyperdeck Studio Mini Recorder, a Netgear Prosafe Gbit POE Hub and a Dell PC.

Professing himself ‘Knocked out with the quality of the cameras and the images provided’, CPDs chief vet realised that the recording capability allows CPD to produce actual TV programmes using the graphics and mixing capabilities to add production values, producing programmes with far greater longevity.

For the audio the system uses a Sennheiser G4 Diversity Radio Mic System, a TOA 100v line Mixer / Amplifier and eight TOA 100v line Ceiling Speakers. Finally Cache Media supplied a Marshall CV225 IP67 Lipstick Camera, a tiny handheld camera with extra lenses, which allows the surgeon to show very close details of the operation in high resolution. All ancillary equipment was integrated into a custom oak rack cabinet, with internal wiring, system configuration and testing completed at Wyre Broadcast’s warehouse prior to delivery.

In this way, a system originally designed to show the procedures to students in the room, became capable of transmitting over the internet from CPDs IT control in Wales to students working from any remote location including overseas then also of producing a series of standalone instructional videos of extremely high quality. As well as overcoming the physical limitations imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, for student and visitors to the site, Cache Media supplied a Kauto FRTM Temperature Camera in reception which checks he temperature of every visitor for additional peace of mind so that no one suffering from an infection is allowed in.
